Lifeline Project Profiles: Donna, Leslee, and Dan

Meet Donna, Leslee, and Dan. They are the latest Lifeline Project participants to be profiled in our ongoing series highlighting the needs of transplant patients.

Lifeline Participant Donna

In the summer of 2011, Donna was diagnosed with primary amyloidosis, a rare form of bone marrow cancer. Up until August of 2011, Donna had pushed herself to continue working, but when she was hospitalized with the disease, she knew she could no longer keep it up. As a result of her illness, Donna and her husband had to turn their family business over to their children. This has resulted in a loss of their income and concern over affording medical and living expenses during and after her stem cell transplant.

Lifeline Participant Leslee

Leslee is a full-time artist whose work is a true expression of her love for the colors and beauty in nature. However, last October a visit to the doctor’s office caused her life to change drastically. She had been experiencing extremely painful headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and severe bruising. Blood work revealed that she had Philadelphia acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph + ALL) and would need to travel across the country to receive a bone marrow transplant. Her brother was a perfect match and she is now 100% donor DNA. She hopes to be able to return home to her family, friends, and two cats very soon.

Lifeline Participant Dan

Dan was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September of 2011 and will be undergoing a stem cell transplant in July. He is currently unable to work and as a result, lost his home and is struggling with living expenses. Dan’s car also needs significant repairs and without transportation he is unable to get to his medical appointments. He is in need of assistance with transportation and living expenses so he can properly prepare for his upcoming transplant.
