Lifeline Project Profiles: Russell, Gabriel, and Jude

Meet Russell, Gabriel, and Jude. They are the latest Lifeline Project participants to be profiled in our ongoing series highlighting the needs of transplant patients.

Russell

Lifeline Participant Russell

Russell

Russell, a decorated Vietnam veteran, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in June of 2010. In order to treat his ALL he underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. This treatment period was a very difficult time for Russell and his wife. They have been struggling financially with the burden of all of their medical bills and living expenses. Although they are in need of financial assistance, Russell continues to help others, just as he did in Vietnam. He works with organizations to provide trophies to children undergoing chemotherapy. He recognized how tough it was as an adult and imagined it is that much harder for a child.

Gabriel

Lifeline Participant Gabriel

Gabriel

Gabriel was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in February of 2010. Since that time he has dealt with many complications due to treatment; heart failure, iron overload, chemotherapies, and multiple surgeries and procedures. This past summer Gabriel relapsed and was not responding to treatment. He was given a research drug that has enabled him to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Gabriel’s family is thankful and hopeful for a full recovery, but they could use assistance with his medical expenses.

Jude

Lifeline Participant Jude

Jude

At the age of three, Jude was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor, a type of kidney cancer that occurs in children. Over the last three years he has dealt with multiple surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, and a stem cell transplant. Jude is now six years old and has finally been discharged from the hospital. The last three years have been very emotionally and financially difficult on the family. Jude has three siblings and his parents have been doing their best to cover living expenses, but they are still struggling and would benefit greatly from some assistance.
