WSJ profiles Board member

The Wall Street Journal

This week the Wall Street Journal‘s “Donor of the Day” column recognized Charlotte Moss for her efforts to help bone marrow, stem cell, and cord blood transplant patients and their families. Charlotte became very familiar with the cause a decade ago when her brother battled leukemia and she was his donor.

While accompanying her brother through his treatment, Charlotte witnessed firsthand the struggles of transplant patients and their families. She told the Wall Street Journal:

I saw people that I knew weren’t going to make it….Most importantly, there was nobody around to give them that psychological support to boost them up during their treatment, because they couldn’t afford to be there. And that really put the lump in my throat every day.”

Charlotte Moss has been a long-time supporter of The Bone Marrow Foundation and serves as a member of the Board of Directors. She will be honored at the Foundation’s Be A Lifeline Gala being held tonight in New York City.

Lifeline Project Profiles: Arianna, Hailey, and Jayvin

Meet Arianna, Hailey, and Jayvin. They are the latest Lifeline Project participants to be profiled in our ongoing series highlighting the needs of transplant patients.

Lifeline Participant Arianna

Arianna

Arianna

Arianna is a four year old girl who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in December of 2010. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and recently had a stem cell transplant. Arianna loves riding her bike, dressing up, and swimming in the summer. She lives with her nine year old sister Bre and their mother, who could use assistance with transportation and caregiver expenses.

Lifeline Participant Hailey

Hailey

Hailey

Hailey was diagnosed with Hurler syndrome when she was just one and a half years old. She received a bone marrow transplant in March of 2011 and has since developed a chronic anemia similar to Evans syndrome when her bone marrow stopped producing red blood cells. She has received rabbit and horse ATG to treat the disorder. Due to the strenuous nature of treatment, Hailey’s mom has not been able to work. Your donation is tremendously appreciated and will be used for transportation, medical, and daily living expenses.

Lifeline Participant Jayvin

Jayvin

Jayvin

At only seven months old, Jayvin was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). This type of leukemia is extremely rare and the only known cure is a stem cell transplant. Jayvin underwent his transplant at eight months old; if he does not relapse he will be considered cured by the year 2013. Until that time he will continue to receive treatment to maintain his health. Jayvin’s immune system is still compromised, so his mother is unable to work while she cares for him during recovery. His family is in need of assistance with their expenses, especially transportation to and from the treatment center.

Lifeline Project Profiles: Donna, Leslee, and Dan

Meet Donna, Leslee, and Dan. They are the latest Lifeline Project participants to be profiled in our ongoing series highlighting the needs of transplant patients.

Donna

Lifeline Participant Donna

Donna

In the summer of 2011, Donna was diagnosed with primary amyloidosis, a rare form of bone marrow cancer. Up until August of 2011, Donna had pushed herself to continue working, but when she was hospitalized with the disease, she knew she could no longer keep it up. As a result of her illness, Donna and her husband had to turn their family business over to their children. This has resulted in a loss of their income and concern over affording medical and living expenses during and after her stem cell transplant.

Lifeline Participant Leslee

Leslee

Leslee

Leslee is a full-time artist whose work is a true expression of her love for the colors and beauty in nature. However, last October a visit to the doctor’s office caused her life to change drastically. She had been experiencing extremely painful headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and severe bruising. Blood work revealed that she had Philadelphia acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph + ALL) and would need to travel across the country to receive a bone marrow transplant. Her brother was a perfect match and she is now 100% donor DNA. She hopes to be able to return home to her family, friends, and two cats very soon.

Dan

Lifeline Participant Dan

Dan

Dan was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September of 2011 and will be undergoing a stem cell transplant in July. He is currently unable to work and as a result, lost his home and is struggling with living expenses. Dan’s car also needs significant repairs and without transportation he is unable to get to his medical appointments. He is in need of assistance with transportation and living expenses so he can properly prepare for his upcoming transplant.
